The Power of a Survey

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Lynda Pruett How many times have you been asked to participate in a survey? If you are anything like me then the answer is probably hundreds. I am often being stopped in the street and invited to take part in a survey that will only take a few minutes. I do feel sorry for these marketers as I usually decline and say that I am too busy. More often than not the survey is in relation to something that I am not interested in anyway. There must be a lot of people who do take the survey because opinion polls are constantly being quoted for a variety of issues. These survey results are extremely powerful in persuading consumers that a particular product has been voted the best in a survey. We are often influenced, possibly subconsciously, by these survey results and buy the particular product that came out on top. Television commercials for beauty products seem to be the most common ones that state they were voted number one in a survey of so many thousand women. Particular dog and cat food commercials are famous for the line 9 out of 10 pet owners said their cat or dog preferred the brand. So who are we to argue? If the product is the best for the people who took part in the survey then it must be true! Sadly, we are seldom able to have access to the survey itself to see how neutral the questions really were. I often think that the particular survey must have a leaning towards the participants returning the results that the commissioner of the survey wants. All around the world there are survey results being quoted on news channels. If there is an election taking place then the political analysts use the power of a survey to predict the possible outcome of the voting. I dont agree with these types of survey because voting should be a private process and all the effort given to securing that no one else sees your ballot paper seems nullified if you are going to tell the survey taker who you just voted for! The type of survey that I am most likely to take part in is an online one. These often appear on websites and are asking for your opinion on the website itself. The survey is used to judge the experience that you have while visiting the website and is used to improve the site. I am all for that type of survey where you are being asked to help the website owners offer a better service. I will also fill in a customer service survey if I have bought a product from a particular website or to explain why I did not purchase anything. My ideal type of survey is one that is used to provide me with a better service, not to persuade me to buy a particular product because it was voted number 1 in a well known womens magazine. Finally, the type of survey that I hate with a passion on conducted over the telephone. Similar to my attitude to those being taken in the high street I feel that these telephone survey takers are intruding on my privacy. No matter how a survey is conducted there always seem to be enough people willing to participate to produce the results that are quoted in the media. They are certainly a powerful marketing tool. How To Conduct A Home Inventory

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Kevin Sparks *Quick Quiz* Name the brand and model of the television(s) in your house or apartment. How much did your computer cost, and where did you purchase it? What is the serial number on your camera? Could you answer those questions without looking? Now imagine how difficult it would be to come up with this information for ALL of your belongings while dealing with the stress of a fire, burglary, or natural disaster. In such a case, you may spend countless hours trying to remember everything only to realize what you forgot after your claim has been processed. You might not even be able to produce the required proof for the claim to be accepted. How can a home inventory help? In the unfortunate event of a major loss, your insurance company will need a lot of information to process your claim. If youve already created a home inventory, this process will be much easier and should be completed faster. Otherwise, you might not be able to account for everything, and if youre unable to provide the required information, you may receive less than full compensation for your loss. Also, depending on your situation and the tax laws where you live, this information may also be required for a tax credit. And finally, if you file a police report for stolen items, having the model number and serial number will improve your odds for recovering the stolen property. What youll need to start Although you could pay a service company to come in to your house to conduct a home inventory, many people do it themselves using either a home inventory booklet, or a software program for recording their home inventory. Some people also include photographs, digital pictures, or video tape. Whichever you decide, youre going to need to record the following information about each item: Description Brand/Model Serial Number Condition In addition, youll need to record information about the value of each item. Depending on whether your insurance company pays claims based on replacement value or current value, youll need to record details such as: Purchase Price Replacement Cost Current Value When/Where purchased To provide as much information as possible, you should also take photographs or videotape to document the existence and condition of the items in your home inventory. Note that some of the software programs have a feature to allow you to import your digital photos to store the picture with each item. These programs typically allow you to save your data on a backup disk and/or print a report for safe keeping in a safe-deposit box, your work place, or a friends house. How to conduct your home inventory Now that you know what you need, heres how to get started: Systematically go through your house or apartment one room at a time*. List down each item in the room, including the contents of desks, drawers, closets, etc. Describe each item as completely as possible, recording all the details as discussed in the previous section. When youve finished all the rooms in your house, dont forget the garage, patio, outside buildings, etc. *You might be tempted to skip from one room to the next recording the high dollar items only. But, while this is better than nothing, remember that the little items can really add up also, and in the event of a disaster, these items might be the most difficult to remember. Whats next? Ok, so after youve completed your home inventory you know what you have and how much its worth. Great! Now review your home insurance policy - Are you over insured? Under insured? Perhaps for the first time, you can answer this question easily by comparing your policy amount to the total value of your household items. Remember, if you store your home inventory list in your home, it could be destroyed along with your belongings. Whether your home inventory consists of a written list, diskette, cd-rom, paper report, photographs, or whatever, be sure to store it in a safe place - preferably in another location such as at your work place, a friends house, or in a safe-deposit box. Dont put it off! Perhaps youve been reading this article and thinking about creating your own home inventory. Get started now while its fresh in your mind! If you have just moved into an apartment or house, starting your home inventory may be an easy task. This is a great time to begin organizing your home inventory. If youve been living in your house for awhile, however, you may have a lot of work to do. Now is the time to start! Plan to inventory at least one room in your house this week, and continue one room at a time until youre done. Maid Of Honor: The Bride’s First Lieutenant

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Ron King What Does A Maid Of Honor Do? The scope of the maid of honor’s role in the wedding depends upon (1) how much responsibility she is willing to take on, and (2) how much responsibility the bride is willing to delegate. Usually the maid of honor is chosen because she is 1 of the bride’s very closest friends, and her job description as maid of honor is similar to her activities as a friend. Aide-De-Camp The maid of honor does much more than simply walk down the aisle ahead of the bride and stand beside her during the ceremony. She is the “highest ranking” personal assistant to the bride during the wedding preparations. The maid of honor shoulders some large responsibilities, such as hosting the bridal shower and bachelorette party, and helping to choose the bridesmaid’s dresses. But she is also there just to be supportive of the bride, to act as a friend and confidante, and to help her in ways both great and small. Throughout the weeks and months of wedding planning, the maid of honor is involved every step of the way, from choosing a dress and wedding location to helping wrap favors and set up for the reception. Party Hostess 2 of the larger responsibilities of the maid of honor are hosting the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. As 1 of the bride’s closest friends, the maid of honor is the ideal candidate to host these gatherings. She knows best what type of party the bride will enjoy, and what types of gifts are most suitable for the bride’s taste. Because the bridal shower and bachelorette party are aspects of the wedding preparation the bride usually has little control over, she’ll have the pleasure of not stressing about them. She delegates these duties to her maid of honor, and rests assured that her friend will handle them admirably. Wardrobe Consultant Many times the maid of honor plays a key role in selecting dresses for the wedding. She ordinarily chooses her own dress for the wedding from a selection provided by the bride. Once the color and style of the maid of honor’s dress has been selected, she works hand-in-hand with the bride to choose the bridesmaids’ dresses. Their style and color will complement the maid of honor’s dress, while taking into consideration what looks best on each of the bridesmaids. The maid of honor often assists the bride in choosing her own wedding dress. Adviser And Confidante The wedding day is understandably hectic for the maid of honor. Although she has supported the bride throughout the planning process, her most important responsibilities take place on the actual day of the wedding. Besides standing at the altar beside her friend, the most important role of the maid of honor this day is to keep the bride calm and to handle any last-minute problems that may arise. Angel-In-Chief Like most things in life, few weddings go exactly as planned, and it is the maid of honor’s duty to be sure that any problem does not upset the bride. Emergency supplies the maid of honor should keep on hand include: extra stockings, lipstick in the bride’s color, tissues, safety pins and hairpins. These can come in handy if the bride has any last-minute trouble with her attire, hair or makeup. The maid of honor plays the important role of ensuring that the bride looks her best throughout the day. Counselor And Friend When all is said and done, the most significant role of the maid of honor is to be a friend to the bride. The planning and preparations, and the actual wedding itself can be very stressful and emotional for the bride. What the bride needs more than anything else during this time is someone who will offer a sympathetic ear and practical advice. This, then, is the most important function of the maid of honor. Dating - Be Prepared To Get Hurt

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By CD Mohatta Many of us hate dating for all the trouble it involves. You never know what kind of person will your date be? You have some clues, but as you know more about him/her, your enthusiasm dips. You had never asked for such a dating partner. There is nothing common between both of you and as you have more dates, you start thinking that you don’t like this person. He/she may not be well groomed, or may be always coming late, talking few things that you don’t understand and this all creates confusion in your mind. How do I say no now and begin with another date. The same process has to be repeated. It all is so tiring. In the beginning, we are full of enthusiasm, but after few experiences, the enthusiasm wanes. Tiredness takes over us. Let me forget dating for a while and focus on my career/studies. This dating frustrates me totally. I would rather live alone and do better. I am tired and confused. You may not alone thinking all this. This situation is not very uncommon. Can one stop dating altogether? Very few can do that. We need a partner to fulfill us. We need somebody to share the life. The loneliness can be worse. What is to be done? If you are encountering repeated failures, please give yourself a break for few days. Think about what all went wrong. Whether your choices were wrong or your expectations were not clear to you? Find out more about what you want and how can you attract someone who has those qualities. Forget the past failures. Clean the slate and restart. C.D. How Do I Lose Weight? Your Keys To Weight Loss

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Ian Robertson Losing weight is something that typically does not come easy for most. It requires a certain level of discipline and focus that many feel they havent the time for, but since your life is in the balance, I feel ones health should become a priority. Unfortunately, there is no magic elixir or secret exercise that will make you lose fat instantly. It takes hard work. It requires a blend of regular exercise and a nutritious diet in order for optimal success to be achieved. What About Fat And Calories? One pound of fat equals 3500 calories, plain and simple, and since it is never recommended that one loses any more than 2-3 lbs. in a week, it would be reasonable to cut back 500 calories a day. So, cut out the french fries and replace it with something like celery sticks or steamed broccoli. If this is done every day for a week, a pound will be lost, guaranteed. Some trainers actually advise a seriously deconditioned client to work on their diet before hitting the gym. A Diet Myth Exposed The idea that eating more will only add to your fat is a deeply entrenched myth that needs to be clarified. It has actually been clinically proven that eating more meals but of smaller portions keeps your metabolism elevated and thus helps burn more calories than the traditional approach of three large meals a day. Ideally, these meals should be spaced out roughly 3-4 hours apart and should contain a good source of protein and a good source of carbohydrates, such as oatmeal, pasta, potatoes, corn, beans, peas, apples, leafy green vegetables, and firmer, darker breads. Some ideal sources of protein can be found in chicken, turkey, seafood of all types, and lean cuts of beef among other kinds. How Much Should I Eat? To give you an idea on how to exhibit portion control, aim to have your protein be no larger or smaller than a deck of cards, and your side of veggies no bigger than your fist. Aim for 5 meals of this size a day and your diet will be set for success. Oh, and it wouldnt hurt to supplement your diet with a multivitamin, just to ensure complete and proper nutrition. How To Exercise For Mamimum Strength And Weight Loss Make sure that you work intelligently and know that lifting weights requires a certain level of understanding, and in some instances, expertise. So, read up before you run down to the gym for the first time. Weight training is believed to have longer lasting effects on the metabolism than simple aerobic exercise and the harder the better, so I typically indoctrinate my clients in the world of weightlifting from the very beginning. In some clinical trials the subjects resting metabolic rate was still elevated 39 hours after strenuous exercise! Don’t Go Overboard With Workouts. When lifting weights, be sure to keep workouts to a 3 day per week maximum, at least for the first 3-4 months or so. This will ensure that the bodys neural pathways have adapted to the new level of exertion and that the connective tissue in the joints have been adequately strengthened before adding a fourth workout day. How To Pick Your Exercises Make sure you pick exercises that utilize the most muscle groups as possible in order to burn the most calories. Many like to choose a pushing exercise, a pulling exercise, a leg exercise , and a core exercise and perform 20-25 repetitions for each movement and make a circuit out of it. This could be done three times total and that would be an excellent workout. Just make sure you choose a weight that you can handle for no more than 20-25 repetitions. This will make it challenging for your body, which will ultimately result in greater fat loss for you. Also, keep workouts to a 45 minute maximum. The body cant handle much more abuse past that point. And once you finish your workout, it should be noted that you have a one hour window of opportunity to eat a meal of ample carbohydrates and moderate protein to make sure you replenish your energy stores and fuel your body for muscle growth, otherwise self-cannibalism on the muscle tissue will ensue and, yes, its as bad as it sounds. You CAN Do It! If you follow these simple rules of fitness, keep your portion sizes under control, and eat plenty of protein, fruits and vegetables, then a newer, trimmer you looms over the horizon. I guarantee it. Ian Robertson is a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Advanced Weight Training Specialist, as well as a Certified Nutritionist. Teach English in Japan

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By John Paxton If youve recently graduated from school and are at a crossroads in the start of your career Teaching English in Japan might be worth looking into. Believe it or not the English language learning industry is a multi-billion dollar one that employs over 65,000 ESL teachers. Whats Needed to Teach In order to get a job teaching English in Japan, you will need to be a college graduate from any field (sorry but 2 year degrees wont cut it.) You pretty much also need to speak English at native level fluency. There are some that do find teaching jobs in Japan even though English is not their first language but this is more an exception to the rule. You will also need a working visa in order to work legally in the country. Most employers will take care of this for you. Working visas are good for one year with extensions being from 1 to 3 years for U.S. citizens. Another very helpful trait is an interest in Japanese culture. When you fly 10,000 miles east things get pretty different pretty fast. So having a desire to experience Japanese culture is helpful. Not from the standpoint of getting a job but from the standpoint of enjoying the experience. Those who dont have a natural curiosity or desire to experience Japanese culture usually dont last that long. What Isnt Required Contrary to what many believe a TESL or TEFL certificate is not required in order to teach. Although it does help getting higher paying jobs. The majority of the large recruiters, the ones that have recruitment centers all over the world, dont require TESL certification. Also because these large recruiters pay the minimum wage of 250,000 yen per month (roughly $2100 U.S.) they also dont require much teaching experience. In fact the bulk of this industry runs on recent grads. General Information About Teaching English in Japan Lets start with money. You should expect a wage of at least 250.000 yen per month. This is a entry level salary for those with little or no experience. However be warned this wont go that far in large cities like Tokyo or Osaka. You should expect a bit more to compensate for the cost of living factor in these large cities. Large English schools like Nova, Aeon, Geos, Berlitz & ECC will also offer 2 weeks paid vacation and most national holiday off. Schools differ on which national holidays they observe but the norm is 8 to 10 per year. Expect to work close to 40 hours per week. Each school is different but you can expect roughly 20 to 25 actual teaching hours per week with the rest being office hours. A typical teacher will work 5 days per week with Sunday and another weekday off. Teachers with seniority may get Saturdays and Sundays off. Typical office hours are filled by grading student work, taking class notes, preparing future lessons or just chatting with students. Most schools also will provide you with health insurance or subsidize it. Larger chain schools, mentioned above, usually have a fixed curriculum. This means youll be using their in house texts, tapes and other support materials for teaching. For those who dont have a lot of teaching experience its a helpful in reducing stress (there already is quite a bit in adjusting to the culture and learning the language etc.) Those who need to express their creativity in the lesson will probably find it stifling. Students who will be assigned to your class will probably be of all ages. Literally from 5 to 6 year olds up to 75 and 76 year olds. Some schools deal specifically with children or adults but because of the competitiveness of this industry, most schools cater to all ages. Student wise, you can expect a healthy dose of children and young professionals like office ladies and salary men as theyre called to make up the bulk of who you teach. Most of your large chain schools will provide you with some type of accommodations. This is a very big help as its difficult to find accommodations on your own without the help of a Japanese national. Not to mention being very expensive. Although the type provided will vary expect things to be on the small side. Teaching English in Japan surely is an experience best taken with an open mind. For those with an interest in Japanese culture it surely can be one of the most enjoyable and lucrative ways to experience Japan. You can find more detailed information about what to expect teaching in Japan at www.all-about-teaching-english-in-japan.com Distribution of this article is permissible as long as the entire article including author information and website address are included. Skincare - Understanding How Your Skin Works

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Heidi McGowan Understanding Your Skin What Is Skin and How Does it Work? Believe it or not our skin is our bodys largest organ which covers every single surface of the body. It is possible for every woman to have perfect skin regardless of age, race or colouring, as long as she knows how it functions and how to look after it. The skin is made up of two main layers; these are called the epidermis and the dermis The Epidermis This is the top layer of skin which you can see. Its function is to protect the body from infection and seal in moisture. It is built up of several layers of living cells which are then topped up by sheets of dead cells. The skin is constantly growing and producing new cells at the base. The dead cells eventually flake away, thus meaning that every time a new layer of skin forms, this is the chance to have a soft, glowing complexion. The lower levels of skin cells are fed by the blood supply from underneath, whereas the upper dead cells require only water to ensure they are kept plump and smooth. The epidermis is responsible for your colouring as it holds the skins pigment. The thickness of your skin varies, and is much thinner around the eye area. The Dermis The dermis is the layer which lies underneath the epidermis, and is composed of living cells only. It consists of bundles of tough fibres which give elasticity, firmness and strength. There are also blood vessels which feed vital nutrients to these areas. Unlike the epidermis which can repair itself, the dermis, if injured will be permanently damaged. The dermis contains two specialised organs, firstly Sebaceous Glands which are tiny organs that opens into hair follicles on the surface of your skin. They produce your skins natural lubricant, an oily secretion called sebum. These glands are mostly concentrated on your scalp and face, particularly around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. This explains why these areas are oilier than others. Sweat Glands are found all over your body and they help to regulate your bodys temperature The temperature of your skin drops as the sweat evaporates on the skins surface.. So what are the main functions of your skin? 1) It acts as a thermostat, retaining heat or cooling you down with sweat. 2) It acts as a waste disposal. Certain waste is expelled from your body during the day through your skin. 3) It provides you with a sense of touch which in turn helps you communicate with the outside world. 4) It offers protection from potentially harmful things. Skin Facts 1) Your skin can cleanse, heal and renew itself. The effectiveness of this depends on how well you look after your skin. 2) Skin is a barometer of your emotions. When you are embarrassed it becomes red (blushing) and equally shows signs of stress. 3) The condition of your skin is an overall sign of your health. The skin shows signs of poor diet, lack of sleep and stress. 4) Smoking and alcohol consumption cause premature ageing of the skin (wrinkles). How to Achieve Totally Anonymous Cellular Communications

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gerald_Montgomery]Gerald Montgomery Introduction For whatever reason, Big Brother, with greatly enhanced powers to violate your privacy and civil rights thanks to the USA PATRIOT ACT, has decided that YOU need to be brought in. For whatever reason. Any reason will do: anybody can be a terrorist now. One way you could be located is through a device just about everyone is in possession of: a cell phone. You can be tracked by your cell phone in one of two ways: by triangulating the radio signal your phone gives off when it is on or through the use of Global Positioning Satellite technology. Most of the latest cell phones on the market today come with the GPS chip pre-installed. We’re sold this innovation on the basis of safety. All great restrictions of freedom begin with pleas for our safety. It’s for our own good, you see. Or It’s to protect the CHILDREN. When you slice through the propaganda used to justify these accessories, it all boils down to one thing. They want to have the ability to know where you are at…at all times. Tracking you via your cell phone makes that goal very easy to achieve. An anonymous cell phone? How? When you go to get a cell phone, the process is very much akin to getting a mortgage on a home or buying a fancy new car. They want to know everything about you. Where you live. Where you bank. What your State Slave Number (SSN) is. They check your credit. They want personal references. Business references. They want to know where you have been working since graduating from kindergarten. They want to tie your account to a credit or debit card number. Everything they can get to link that cell phone to your entire life history. If you pass the economic background checks, they grant you the privilege of paying for incoming and outgoing airtime, roaming charges, hidden fees and taxes that were not spelled out clearly when you thought you’d be paying $49.99 a month then get a bill that’s more like $55 or $60. And, God forbid, should you EVER go over your monthly allocation of minutes. That $50 bill can easily escalate into the hundreds of dollars. It’s a great racket if you’re AT&T, NexTel or Cingular. And everywhere you go, there you are, easily located 5 by 5, a blip on a satellite feed that can pinpoint your location within ten feet. They know exactly who you are by your cell phone signal. That number is practically tied to every commercial record about you. Now let’s outline a methodology that greatly reduces Big Brother’s ability to locate you in real time at any time, anywhere you might be at right now. First, you need an anonymous cell number. A number that is in NO WAY tied to any SSN, credit/debit/banking information at all. They might have scooped up your cell signal at NSA headquarters, but that signal has no personal history tied to it. To find out your identity, they’re going to have to snatch you up while your phone is on and then jack your wallet to get a look at your identification. So go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart or any other kind of mart like 7-11 that sells pre-paid cellular packages. These packages require no credit checks or ID checks of any kind. They’re all over the place when you look for them. You are paying more for your airtime going this route than you would with that great plan that Cingular wants to hook you up with but the trade off here is your very anonymity. My Verizon phone has Internet access on the phone as well. You can be just as connected as anyone else, without giving up one microbit of privacy. It’ll just cost you a little more for the privilege. When you find the phone you like with the features you like, take it up to the cashier and pay for it…WITH CASH. Don’t be an idiot and use a credit/debit/banking instrument to pay for the transaction. You’ll immediately blow your cover that way. That phone purchase will now be tied to some sort of banking record. And if they want to find out whose phone signal that is radiating out there, they’ll be able to track it by your debit card purchase at Wal-Mart on 06-06-06. Wrong answer. Pay with cash. Buy the airtime refill cards with CASH. ALWAYS. The trail will dead end right there. At a cash transaction. Nothing more will be known about you and your cell phone than that. Practical COMSEC Communications Security (COMSEC) is the next order of business. So you’ve got an anonymous cell phone number now. That’s great. You can feel like a real secret agent, sure. But if you go everywhere with that cell phone ON, you will still be located if they want to locate you. I recommend that you go about your daily affairs with that cell phone turned off. Use it like an answering service. Come up at RANDOM times during the day and night, check your voice mail, see who has left a message, and if at all possible, call your callers back on a public land line. I know it’s a pain in the arse, but being secure and maintaining a semblance of privacy in this Total Surveillance Society they’re erecting around us isn’t easy. Most people don’t like to be burdened with the extra hassle of protecting their privacy. So they’re more than happy to sacrifice their privacy for convenience. Big Brother and Big Business make it so darn convenient for you to sign over your privacy for $49.99 a month. Don’t do it. Gerald A. Choosing a Secured Loan

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeff_Lakie]Jeff Lakie A generation or so ago most people were raised with the philosophy that if you don’t have the money to pay for it, then you simply couldn’t have it. But these days, the availability of secured loans makes it eminently possible to purchase those things that you would like without having to have a lump sum up front. Secured loans make it easy to buy the things you want now, whether that is a new car, a holiday, or some improvements for your home, so that you can enjoy them while you pay for them. But the very availability of secured loans can make finding the right one for you a daunting task. Most banks and building societies offer various packages, so how can you find the loan that is best for you, and provides you with a repayment plan that suits your pocket and doesn’t charge enormous interest rates? There is a proliferation of ads on TV for the deals offered by various lending institutions, but the rates advertised are typical ones, not the rates that will necessarily be offered to you. Each individual’s situation will be taken into account separately, and the only way that you can find out the deal that each bank or building society is prepared to offer to you is by applying to each one individually. This can be a time consuming process that can result in you selecting the first deal you’re offered, rather than ploughing through the paperwork of multiple lending institutions. Thankfully, there are resources that can help you find the best secured loan for you without having to undergo this process yourself. There are many financial brokers available both in the physical and the virtual world, and the latter can help you find the best deal for you without even leaving your home. These brokers have access to each bank or building society’s information, allowing them to work out the rates you would be offered without having to approach each one yourself. The process is simple - input your details and you will be pointed in the right direction. Then with all the right information, you will be able to approach the lending institution that will offer you the best deal so that you can enjoy worry-free the new kitchen or that exotic holiday that is made possible by your secured loan.
