6 Steps to a Healthier Pizza

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Meri Raffetto When working towards weight loss goals there are many food items that just seem taboo. It is true that many foods are higher in fat, sugar, and calories than other foods but you don’t have to omit them. People can maintain their weight loss more effectively with a plan that includes moderation and balance. Let’s take pizza as an example. I have never met anyone who does not enjoy pizza but we are all well aware that pizza, with its white flour crust and melted cheese and high fat meats can add up in calories fast! It can, however, be part of your diet and not affect your weight if you follow some ground rules. 1). Choose a lower fat crust How do you do this? Thin or regular crust pizzas are a better choice than pan pizzas. The pan pizzas have more fat added to the crust. This may make the crust more rich and crusty but it also adds about 80 more calories per slice. 2). Avoid cream and oil/pesto based sauce Using traditional tomato sauce is the best way to go. Many gourmet pizzas offer a variety of sauces now but they can add up in calories. Stick with a traditional tomato sauce to save those additional calories. 3). Pizza size Have you ever noticed that your pizza slice is a different size at different restaurants? This is so important because one slice of pizza at your favorite parlor may actually be 2 servings. One medium slice pizza should be around 6 inches long. You don’t have to break out the ruler but be aware of how big your slices are. 4). Have a side dish Traditionally, when we eat pizza that is all we eat with that meal. This can lead to excess calories with large portion sizes. Order a side salad with your pizza so you can eat less servings of pizza and still have a complete meal. Having a side salad instead of an extra slice of pizza saves around 100 calories. 5). Avoid the high fat toppings Pepperoni and sausage add a lot of calories to pizza. Choosing Canadian bacon, vegetable, or just plain cheese can help you avoid excess calories. 6). Avoid adding extra high fat toppings Adding extra meats and cheese will add anywhere from 50 to 100 extra calories per slice. Let’s do a pizza meal makeover: Original pizza dinner 3 slices of pan pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni 12 ounce soda Total: 1140 calories Pizza dinner makeover 2 slices of regular crust pizza with tomatoes and mushrooms 1 side salad with ranch dressing Water Total: 530 calories Second pizza dinner makeover 2 slices of thin crust pizza with tomatoes and mushrooms 1 side salad with ranch dressing Water Total: 470 calories The moral of this article is that you don’t have to give up higher calorie foods. It is all about balance and moderation. Making good choices with your pizza will help you manage your weight loss goals and also allow you to have some fun foods once in awhile. 2006, Meri Raffetto Owner of Real Living Nutrition Services, Meri Raffetto is a recognized professional in the area of nutrition and wellness. Making Soap - Without The Stinky Mess

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Mike D Tucker When I think of making soap I always think of granny from the Beverly Hillbillies stirring up a big pot of Lye soap out back by the swimming hole. Well if you ever made your own soap at home it is sort of like that. I wanted to learn how to make soap so I read a book at our local library and decided to give it a try. I bought the materials I needed, Lye, distilled water, and I decided on using lard. Now before I go any further a word to the wise. Make you soap outside. Lye is some pretty corrosive stuff. I got a little on my kitchen counter top and it does not shine any more. Do not use an aluminum spoon like I did. It will eat it up. Do not pour your water into the lye. It may explode all over your kitchen like I did. Are you starting to see a pattern here? Soap making can be fun but I would read a bit more about it before you ever attempt your first batch. Well my first batch as you can imagine was a total disaster. I did not want to admit defeat so I tried again and my 3rd batch came out really nice. I now experiment with different ingredients, oils, colors and scents. You can get really creative with your soaps, making molds for them and other different decorative ideas. It really is a lot of fun once you get the basics down. I have now found a much easier and safer way to make soap at home. It is called the melt and pour technique I bought some soap base for melting at the craft store and brought it home. You can either melt it in you microwave or a double boiler. It is a whole lot safer than messing with lye. Once it is melted you can add your fragrances or coloring. Then you just pour into your molds and let it harden. If you have excessive bubbles on the top of your mold you can spray it down with rubbing alcohol. In a few hours you can remove it from the mold and you are ready to use it. Lately we have been making big batches of our soap. We put them in a nice decorative basket and take them down to the local craft show or flea market. We have been selling out every time. This has not only been fun but has created a nice little income. Mike D Tucker is a self employed Internet entrepreneur and product reviewer. Prevention and Cures for Stretch Marks

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Gail Leino Stretch marks are caused by the stretching of the skin to the point where its elastic fibers begin to break. When they first appear stretch marks are red and inflamed and may even feel sore. Despite their jagged look most stretch marks do not create cause for concern. They will eventually fade to a color a few shades lighter than your skin shade. It’s possible for anyone, male or female to get stretch marks. Men and women get them after rapid weight gain or loss or during puberty. Bodybuilders will get them if they bulk up too fast and women will usually get stretch marks during the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. There are a variety of treatments for stretch marks on the market. Dermatologists have tried treatments such as, Topical retinoid therapy, chemical peels, and pulse dye laser therapy, but it’s very difficult to treat stretch marks once they have faded and flattened. Exercise is a good way to keep skin and muscles firm, which in turn reduces the chances of getting stretch marks. A moderate diet encouraging slow weight loss will help prevent stretch marks. When stretch marks are still inflamed you can try rubbing them with an oil rich in Vitamin E or Vitamin A. Olive oil is good and it’s probably sitting in your cabinet right now. Coca butter may work well. There are recipes available to mix and apply to the skin on the regular basis to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks after they begin to fade. Also, a diet rich in protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin A will help maintain healthy skin, hair, and nail growth. If the stretch marks are sore you can apply Aloe Vera gel to help sooth and cool it. Dating Advice: How to Captivate a Man

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Terry Hernon MacDonald You’ve gone on one or two dates with a guy, and you’re crazy about him. Now how do you keep him interested? How do you keep him coming back for more? It’s easier than it sounds. You don’t have to be able to speak a foreign language, live in a loft in a trendy neighborhood, drive a hybrid, or be able to bolt tequila shots without flinching. You don’t even have to be particularly great looking. Or funny. You don’t have to be anything but yourself. Sure, you may be thinking, but I’m not all that interesting. In fact, I’m actually kind of boring. At the end of the day, who isn’t? The key to captivating a man is to cultivate and maintain interests of your own. This means: 1) You never cancel a night out with a friend to go out with him–ever. (Why don’t you just tell the guy you’re desperate and afraid to let him out of your sight?) 2) You continue to pursue your hobbies, your career, and your relationships with friends and family at the rate you did before you started dating. In other words, you keep a full life. If the guy tells you he can’t see you this weekend, don’t ask him why. Let him volunteer the information. If and when he does, tell him to have a good time and mean it. Chances are, he’ll be intrigued enough to ask you what your plans are for the weekend. Keep your answer vague (especially if you don’t already have plans). Tell him that you may go out with friends, and then go home and call one or two to line something up. It’s also quite attractive to a man when you are not available to pick up every time he calls. If the phone rings while you’re in the shower, let him leave a message and wonder where you are. I do not advise you to lie or to play games, and I do not advocate manipulation, but ask yourself: Do you like men who follow you around, hang on your every word, and call you more often than necessary? Are you turned on by a guy who shows up after you’ve told him you need a night out with your friends? A guy who’s afraid to let you out of his sight? Of course not. All of us–men and women–want a “prize” when it comes to dating and relationships. We want someone who will treat us well, but who isn’t overly available. Overly available people are not interesting. People who have places to go and people to see are exciting–and a bit mysterious. Keep a full life, and you will be interesting. You will be captivating. That man you’re so crazy about will definitely come back for more! Planning A Wedding? Tips On How To Attend A Bridal Show

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Charity Plaster If youre getting married, a Bridal Show is a great place to get started. Since 1996, I have attended or participated in over 150 Bridal Shows, and I thought I would pass on some tips to you, to make your trip a little easier. You can find local Bridal Shows being held anywhere from malls to hotels, convention centers and wedding facilities. You can expect to see anywhere from 10 to over 100 wedding vendors, and every single one of them is competing for your business. What to do? How to start? What to bring? If possible, find out which vendors will be participating in the show before you attend. This will help you map out your plan of attack. Knowing who will be there in advance, as well as maybe having a layout of the show itself, you can seek out the vendors you really want to talk to, and those that arent so important to you. Wear comfortable shoes and leave your coat in the car. Many shows do not offer coat check and it can become quite a burden to lug your coat, your purse, your brochures, and everything else around! This is why you need tosee next item! Bring someone with you! Bring your Mother, a Bridesmaid, and yes, your fianc may even enjoy himself! They can help you with collecting information and would be happy you included them in the planning process! As for your fianc? Just tell him that he can win free stuff and eat free cake! Other than some cake samples, and possibly appetizers, most Bridal Shows will not have food or drink available to purchase. Make sure you eat before you go, and bring a beverage. Dont take too many people with you. Theyll wander off and youll spend all your time trying to keep everyone together instead of focusing on your goals for the day. Bring address labels. I recommend printing out labels on your home computer with your name, address, phone number, email address and wedding date. I also recommend opening a free email account that is designated strictly for all the wedding info you will receive and then cancel them email account after you have booked all of your vendors! You can also rent a P.O. Box to handle all the wedding brochures and mailings you will receive, and then cancel the PO Box when you no longer want the mailings. However, just remember, these vendors will use the information you provide for them if you dont want sales pitch phone calls or mailings, simply do not give out your phone number or address! You may miss a great deal though! Bring the following items: pen, notebook, date book, checkbook, credit card and a large tote bag to carry everything in. Many vendors offer special pricing if you book with them and leave a deposit with them the day of the show. Still not sure if this vendor is truly the one you want? Ask if they would be willing to extend the special price to you for any length of time after the show. Most vendors wont have a problem working with you. If they say no, it makes you wonder why you need to do it RIGHT THERE AND THEN! Say thank you, and pass on by. Maybe it wasnt meant to be. Before you place that deposit, be 100% sure that you have read and agree to all the details on their contract concerning the description of what it is you are signing up for and their policies. What sounds like a great deal wont be so great if you later find out the DJ takes an hour break and your cake doesnt come with a stand! If you plan on attending the Fashion show portion of the day, make sure you arrive at least an hour early. Seating is often first come, first serve, and if youve brought all 12 of your Bridesmaids along, you want to guarantee good seats for everyone! If attending the Fashion Show isnt so important to you, then use that time to visit with the vendors. Since the majority of brides will be watching the show, you will have a better chance to actually talk to a vendor and it will be a much quieter atmosphere. If you are provided with a Bride sticker, dont be embarrassed to wear it! It can become confusing for vendors to identify everyone that attends, and if they know you are the bride, you are more likely to get special treatment! When filling out any contest entries or door prize drawing slips, print clearly! Who would want to miss out on winning a free limo for their wedding because no one could read your phone number? The best place to take notes is on the actual brochure handed out by each vendor. That way you connect a face to your notes, to your brochure, and it will be easier to remember when you make your follow up calls. Most shows will charge a nominal fee for attendance. Make sure you pre-register if the option is available, and dont be too embarrassed to call the company hosting the show to see if they offer any discounts on admission. Enjoy yourself! Its just a bridal show! Nothing HAS to be set in stone that day. Many of the bigger shows will be crowded and noisy dont let this deter you! Use this time to gather information and enjoy any of the special offers extended to you. You are the Bride; you make the rules when dealing with vendors. Its YOUR day, not theirs! A Full Scale War

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Allen Martin It happens every morning when you mosey out of bed, somewhere between the time you take off that robe and the instant you step into the shower. For others, it happens immediately after a workout, as soon as you peel off those sweaty clothes and stand aimlessly in your birthday suit. Then, the big moment arrives. The excitement, the tension, it all forms a giant knot in your throat. This experience is a lot like playing the roulette wheel and you know you have plenty riding on this one. Hence, the numbers that come up can spree a variety of reactions. You step onto the scale in your bathroom and peek through your fingers at the fate staring back at you. To some, you jump up and down like you just hit the jackpot. Others shriek as if theyd just crapped out. Well, the scale is indeed a useful tool to monitor your weight-loss developments. What other method is there to track specifically how much youve progressed in your endeavors to lose weight? Yet, the scale can be like a lousy personal trainer. It can be giving you bad information. In other words, do not become too dependent on this devilish, little device sitting on your bathroom floor. Here are two reasons why: * Scales are not perfect. At any given moment, it can go from being your best friend to your worst enemy. If the scale isnt tipping your way, it can throw your entire mental state off the mark. Scales can often deceive you into thinking youre heavier or lighter than you actually are. In more case, its the latter. And by thinking that youre that far ahead of the game, the only one youll be fooling is yourself. Instead, try going by how your clothes fit on your body or how you feel internally than relying on some imperfect machine. Take a picture of yourself at the beginning of the month and then at the end of the month to evaluate the progress. Obsession with the scale is not unlike other fixations its certainly not healthy. * Scales tend to dictate. Too many people are consumed with the numbers on the scale. Its not unlike the scenario of a baseball player who is completely engrossed in his batters average. The average is just a number. He should be more concerned with winning the game. The same goes with the battle against weight loss. The goal should never be a number. If you become too concerned with reaching a specific number, by a certain time, it can lead to starvation, bulimia, malnutrition, many conditions that are not beneficial to your body or youre health. * Remember, the best scale you can have is your mind. If its telling you that the unwanted fat is disappearing from your figure like a dress on prom night, chances are that youre right. How to Buy Prescription Drugs Online

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Hannah_Roberts] Hannah Roberts Giving rise to a plethora of services that have significantly changed the way we live, work and shop, the internet has also provided us with great benefits like multiple canvassing and buying products without having to leave home. Even medicines may now be conveniently bought online. However, unlike many products we purchase, online medicines are not something that can be taken lightly since there are some web sites that sell medicine that is unsafe and could put your life in danger. There are many reasons why buying prescription drugs online can carry dangers. Here are some of them: Many of these sites are not liscensed pharmacies. Online sites often give incorrect diagnoses, causing your true condition to go untreated and possibly worsen. An unlicensed pharmacy may not consider protecting your personal information to be a top priority. There are fake medicines that are spread and sold throughout the internet. Likewise, medicines that contains ingredients that either too strong or too weak. And worst there may be dangerous ingredients added or the medicines are already expired. Medicines such as those mentioned are of course not FDAapproved which means that they have not passed safety standards for use set by the FDA. Its also best not to obtain prescriptions online. The best option is to visit a doctor personally so you can undergo the necessary physical check up. Getting prescription online is not a wise choice since you bypass the option of a complete physical check-up, a prerequisite in determining a diagnosis of any health condition. After your doctor has given you a prescription, then that is the only time that you can start purchasing your medicine online. Here are some important tips to utilize when buying online medications: Make sure that your chosen web site is a US state-licensed pharmacy. Legitimate pharmacies and pharmacists in the United States are licensed by the states board of pharmacy. The state board of pharmacy has the say on which web sites are licensed and are in good standing. If you want to see whether your chosen online pharmacy is on the list of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) you may simply visit the website of NABP and look for the name of your chosen online pharmacy. The NABP is a professional association of the state boards of pharmacy and it has a program that can help you search for some of their licensed pharmacies online. Qualities of web sites to choose: Should be licensed by the state board of pharmacy where the web site is operating Always demand for a licensed pharmacist to answer your questions. A safe website should require a prescription from your doctor or other health care professionals who are licensed in the United States to write prescriptions for medications. Likewise, make sure that your privacy is protected. Try to search privacy and security policies that are easy to find and easy to understand. Avoid divulging important personal information such as your social security number, credit card, medical or health history unless you are sure that the web site is safe and private. Also, if ever you find a web site that you feel is illegal, feel free to report the site to the NABP. Run An Employee Background Check on Potential Job Candidates

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Matthew Bass Honesty is supposed to be the best policy right? Unfortunately, numerous people abuse that adage and lie on many details including those on job applications. That is why companies more and more are resorting to the employee background check. A lot of time and money is spent hiring and training a new employee, so companies want to make sure that investment in a new hire will pay off for them. An employee background check would set the companys mind at ease. There are many opportunities for a job applicant to lie, whether it is on their resume or making up job references. With an employee background check, a company can verify whether or not the information on the job applicants resume is accurate. What the employee background check will also do is find out if that potential employee has ever been convicted of a crime, served time in jail and even verifies that your social security number matches who you say you are. In some instances, that employee background check will delve into your credit history and driving record on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state of residence. Some people might object to having their credit and driving histories subject to intense review by a prospective employer and that is definitely a legitimate complaint. However, certain jobs do require that intense scrutiny in your credit and driving history. If a job applicant is interviewing for a position at a bank or other financial institution where handling money is a daily routine, that credit history obtained through an employee background check could be a good indication of how a potential employee would handle someone elses money. By the same token, if a company is hiring bus drivers or drivers that can handle an eighteen-wheeler, wouldnt you want someone with a clean driving record? By obtaining an employee background check with this information, you are not only considering safety but also the possibility of lawsuits. Employers must inform the job applicant that they will perform an employee background check. Legally, there should be a separate document from the job application that a prospective job applicant fills out to authorize this employee background check. It is important to know that if employers are going to delve into credit histories, they have to be upfront and inform a person in writing if they were rejected for a job because of their credit history. Another part of the employee background check is the verification of personal and business references given by the prospective job applicant. Personal references, of course, most likely will give the rose-colored glasses view of the job applicant. So while personal references can be useful, a decision to hire or not hire someone should not rest on those recommendations. However, an employee background check into business references are important in determining a prospective employees work ethic, whether they work better alone or as a team, their salaries and even how fast they were promoted. In this day and age of increased criminal activity, especially white collar crimes, it would be almost, well criminal, NOT to run an employee background check. Spending the money now will likely save a company thousands of dollars in the future on lawsuits. Matthew Bass of BackgroundCheckWizard.com provides more recommendations and information on Tenant Background Checks that you can research at your leisure on his website. Where To Meet Women - Three Places You Must Go To Meet Women

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Derek Rake Have you ever resorted to staying home on a Friday or Saturday night to play with your cat? If so, you need to learn where to meet women and you need to learn it fast! It may seem like the world is filled with men when you are a single guy looking for a date. But don’t get discouraged - members of the opposite sex can be found in more places than you think. We’re going to discuss three places you must go to meet women. Where you meet a woman is very important if you are looking for a quality partner. You want to meet someone who shares similar hobbies and interests. This way you will have something in common right from the start. Here’s one idea - choose to take a class in an area that you find enjoyable. Learn that new hobby you were always fascinated with as a kid or brush up on your current skills in any field you like. Women are attracted to men who are well-rounded and it will be very easy to strike up a conversation in the fun, relaxing atmosphere of a class. Another idea on where to meet women involves hitting the singles bar as often as possible. Women in the singles bars are most probably there to meet that special someone. Given that meeting women is a numbers game, why not congregate where many of them tend to hang out just waiting to meet someone like you. The loud music, dark lights and sexy atmosphere will also help to further increase your odds. Last but not least, devote more time to hanging around a college, university or library. Women are attracted to men who are well educated and informed. You will not only learn some facts to impress members of the opposite sex, but also find great opportunities to meet women while doing it. Just look at the current reality show, Beauty and the Geek, and you will see that more and more women are looking for a man who is not just a pretty face. As you can see, it’s fairly easy to know where to meet women once you set your mind to it. Take up an interesting hobby or join a class where you have a great chance of meeting women with similar interests. Better yet, hit the singles bars or spend more time in an educational institution or library. Whatever method you choose, just make sure you get out and interact with people as much as possible. The woman of your dreams may be just around the corner. The Government Can Help Pay Your Rent

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Linda Meckler If you are low income and live in your own house or live in a mobile home you can get help with your rent from the government. You need to be really low income and it could take years but it will be well worth it to put your name on the waiting list now. If you are a senior and disabled you go to the head of the list. If you are disabled and able to take care of yourself, you can go to the head of the list. It is well worth it for you to call 211 if you have this wonderful information line in your area for social services. If not get on your computer and start researching where you find out this information. If you are a senior citizen go to the Senior Centers in your area. The Senior Centers should have this information. With the assistance of this government money you can stay in your own home. If you do not own your own home or mobile home you will be able to move into your very own apartment. When you receive the phone call or letter saying you have finally made it to the head of the list, make sure you make an immediate appointment and bring all your necessary paperwork. If this is complicated for you have a family member or friend help you. Once you get through all the government red tape you will be happy you stuck in there and now have breathing space after your rent is paid. If you live in a Mobile Home Park and the office staff says we do not accept your paperwork for government help on your rent, you can receive the check in the mail. What the office staff is really saying is they are too lazy to fill out the necessary forms for you every month. Thank you for reading my article.
