Budget For Your Garden

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Thomas Murrell Have you ever thought about how much it costs to maintain your garden? Most people never give it much thought - spending the odd day in the garden when they have time and impulse buying plants at the local nursery. But if you’re serious about saving money and adding value to one of you’re most important assets it’s worth thinking about the ongoing costs associated with garden maintenance and how this can be minimized. It’s also worth spending time and money on your garden so your asset appreciates rather than depreciates. For the average size garden you should budget on one full day of maintenance every two months. That’s a total of 6 full days a year. Now if you like gardening, that’s not a problem and it’s probably something you enjoy and get a lot of satisfaction from. But with today’s busy lifestyles, many of us are time poor and might have other priorities than spending time in the garden. So if you can’t make the regular commitment of a day every two months you need to allow for this in your budget. Costs vary, but on average you would pay $20 an hour for a qualified gardener or horticulturist, so this will cost you $160 every two months or $960 a year. Now this is just for general maintenance and doesn’t include more regular jobs such as mowing or pruning. It also doesn’t include costs such as fertilizing or adding to or improving your garden. Some of the larger companies have recognized this opportunity and are now providing professional garden maintenance services. Darrell Canns, General Manager for Yates Garden Care says the market is huge and the garden maintenance business is 10 years behind the franchised lawn mowing industry. Yates are now entering the market with a full range of professional services including basic lawn mowing, weeding, pruning and fertilizing, small landscaping jobs and tree surgery work. They are developing a professional horticultural franchise to help put people in the industry. To make money a franchise owner will need to meet professional standards set by Yates, undergo training by the company and use the Yates brand name. The service has already been successfully established in the eastern states and is being launched in Western Australia soon. Each franchisee will have about 30 or 40 regular customers. The cost to garden owners is varied and depends on the size of the garden and the time of year. Darrell Canns says this may vary from $50 or $60 a month to $300 a week. He believes the difference with other operators is that their people are qualified and the work is guaranteed. He also says they will quote on the total job rather than offer an hourly rate. An example of a fixed price for a specialized service is $400 to redig a garden bed, weed it, fertilize, replant and mulch. There’s an increasing pride in gardens and for people who don’t have a lot of time this is a service that’s appealing because you know what you get and you know how much it will cost. Mr Canns believes consumers trust the Yates brand and the company has the ongoing expertise in gardening and horticulture. The company is also working on a garden valuation service, where Yates will give a written valuation of the replacement cost of the garden and an ongoing maintenance cost. Canns says this will be used by real estate agents to compare properties and provide a tangible and independent figure on what a garden is worth. So in terms of advice what should one do? Here are eight tips: 1. Budget to maintain your garden. Most people underestimate the value of their garden and many people make costly mistakes by neglecting their garden. Plants and trees may die through lack of water, putting in bad stock, not planting properly, and incorrect fertilizing or pruning. Compared to the value of the plants, the maintenance cost is small. 2. Think about the big picture of your garden. What do you want your garden to look like and what sort of theme. 3. Keep your garden simple. Often simple themes work best and feel more spacious. Set one theme and stick to it. Differentiate between decorative elements. Do they relate to the theme of the garden? 4. Avoid too much maintenance. Low maintenance gardens will cost less over the long term. Think about how much time and money you want to put into your garden in terms of maintenance. 5. Understand what you want. For example a garden for a holiday house would be totally different for your normal home. 6. Plan your garden. Work out what works best for different areas. For example shade versus sun and the purpose for which the garden will be used. 7. Avoid big trees in small spaces. Many people put in totally inappropriate trees and plants in areas that are just too small and at a later date it is very expensive to remove those trees. 8. Avoid buying plants on impulse. Roses are often the worst for this. They look great in the nursery in full bloom but can be a disaster. Plan before you buy. The Artistry of Vintage Crate Labels

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Cynthia Pinsonnault From the late 1800s to mid 1950s, fruits and produce were packed and transported to the marketplace in wooden crates with colorful, informative labels glued to the ends. These labels were an important part of enticing consumers to choose one brand over another and this competition kept packers working to design the most appealing labels. Crate labels were funny, decorative, serious or simply beautiful, picturing everything from the produce itself, to where it came from, to plays on words or puns. By the 1950s, regulations and economy caused packers to begin using preprinted cardboard boxes instead of wooden crates with their beautiful labels. An American art form was lost with the crate and its label. Today, this artistry is finding new appreciation among collectors and anyone looking for unique vintage prints. Where do they come from if they’re lost? Wooden crate labels had to be strong to survive the hazards of getting from packer to marketplace. They had to be able to survive rough handling and damp or even wet transportation by railroad or truck. Therefore, crate labels were printed on high quality, relatively acid-free paper. Large produce companies packed up to one million crates and needed to keep lots of labels on hand. As the change from crates to cardboard took place, many leftover labels were forgotten in packing houses or printing warehouses. In some cases, thousands of labels were left. The very fact that they were forgotten and stored in quantity in dry packing and storage houses prevented them from quickly deteriorating. A wide variety of sizes, colors and designs The size and firmness of the produce determined the size of the crate and, therefore, the size of the label. For instance, tomatoes and grapes were packed in shallow crates, called “lugs,” perhaps 3 to 6 inches tall by as much as 14 inches wide. Apple and citrus labels were about the largest, measuring up to 12 inches tall or wide. Slightly more delicate, pears were packed in smaller crates with labels about 8 by 10 inches, and vegetables even smaller, usually 5 x 7 or 7 x 9 inches. Many labels are nearly alike except the background color or perhaps an item pictured is different, signifying different grades of quality. Also, label designs for brands that might have been sold for up to 50 years, would have been modified during that time to keep up with regulations or to update an image. Plenty of reasonably priced labels available The cost of vintage crate labels is very subjective, determined primarily by availability, quality, age and aesthetic appeal. Like most collectibles, price is an outcome of supply and demand. While some very rare and desirable labels sell for hundreds of dollars, many very old labels sell for just a few dollars. How to know what you’re getting Old, original labels have a distinct look, feel and even smell. Often the paper will show signs of aging. If you look at the print through a lupe or magnifying glass, you’ll see that very old labels look quite different from items printed today. Old stone lithography, for instance, is completely different from modern four-color process printing. Stone lithography used as many colors of ink as were in an image. Four-color printing combines just four inks to create all the colors on a print. Precisely dating some labels can be difficult. Some include a print date but many have no indication of when they were printed. Among the clues available to collectors are: the information included on the label, such as legal information; what people pictured look like; typography; and other style changes. As labels get newer, it becomes more difficult to tell original prints from reproductions. However, close inspection may show many of the same details as for older labels. Unauthorized reproduction carries the threat of legal action, since many labels include copyright, trademark, patent or license information. Label art … This is just the basic story of crate labels and this all-but-lost art form. This is history. It is Americana. It is art. Enjoy! Tips On Finding The Best Backyard Fountain

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Harry Henderson Backyard water fountains always seemed both extravagant and elegant to me. Putting a water fountain in your front yard is ostentatious. Most water fountain homes are extremely expensive, so putting a prominent water feature up is usually a way of showing off how much money you have to spend. A backyard fountain, however, is more private. It is not that the neighbors can not see backyard fountains, but they certainly are not put there for display. When you build a fountain backyard, you simply put it there for your own private contemplation, and as such it is much more tasteful. When I first decided to put in a backyard water feature, my wife thought I was being silly. She had seen many backyard fountain displays, and most of them looked pretty tacky to her. They usually involve something silly like a little cherubic angels dumping water from a pail continuously, or a crocodile spitting up. She could not figure out why I would want this kind of backyard fountain. When I told her what I had in mind, however, she changed her opinion. I almost decided to build it as an indoor water fountain. You see, it was very small and very subtle. The backyard fountain was not going to be one of those great big things. It only used about a gallon a day, and it could be run off of a single solar panel. Basically, the backyard fountain was little more than a tiny pool with a trickling waterfall at the top. It was made out of blue tile and meant to make the quietest of trickling noises. The backyard fountain would not have worked in many neighborhoods there would have been too much background noise to really enjoy its quite sound. Where we lived, however, it was absolutely perfect. It was still a somewhat rural and undeveloped area, so there would be almost no sound to disturb the backyard fountain except for the chirping of crickets. Although the solar powered fountain does not have that much of an effect on the yard as a whole, when you sit near it, it really calms you. I like to sit by the backyard fountain and use it as an aid to meditation. The quiet trickling sounds, and the look of the water flowing always soothe me. It cost me very little to design and build that backyard fountain, and I have gotten a great deal of joy of it. How To Create Edible Art For Your Soiree

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Kathi Dameron Imagine an edible work of art for your next cocktail party. This is a delicious how-to idea that can be adapted to the mood of your special event. For a corporate event, perhaps a company logo or name would be appropriate. For an engagement party, perhaps the names of the couple or their monograms. For an artsy affair, how about a Miro-style abstract design? The ideas are as unlimited as your imagination. The concept is known as caviar painting and is actually quite simple. Give yourself two days and if you are artsy, you should find the process to be lots of fun! For ingredients you will need: cream cheese butter red caviar black caviar golden caviar fine crackers (and perhaps some additional items based on your chosen design) For kitchen supplies you will need: mixing bowl mixer spreading knife or spatula stemmed cake platter plastic wrap Day 1: In a bowl combine 4 parts cream cheese and 1 part butter. Spread on a stemmed cake plate. Make sure to leave about a 1/4 inch edge. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Day 2: Remove plastic wrap. With a sharp knife, lightly trace the outline of your chosen design into the cheese mixture. Fill in the design with red, black and golden caviar. Cover and refrigerate until just prior to your party. Serve with crackers and flutes of bubbly champagne for an elegant, sophisticated soiree! Your guests are sure to “ooh” and “ah” at the culinary artistry that went into creating this creative one-of-a-kind masterpiece. (c) Kathi Dameron and Associates Kathi Dameron is a food columnist. Weight Loss Supplements

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Marius Bezuidenhout Looking for a quick fix from a miracle weight loss drug will probably do more harm than good to your weight loss goals. A good weight loss program may include natural weight loss products or meal supplements in the form of nutritional shakes, however it is to the dieters peril that a weight loss diet is There is no such thing as sustainable fast weight loss, and as such you should try to get as much weight loss information as possible before embarking on any plan of action. As a consumer it is vital that you try to determine the honesty behind a weight loss products marketing strategy. If a product offers a 100 percent success rate, they must be lying. It is perhaps best that you get all the information on a product and then consult your doctor or dietician in order to get a qualified opinion. You should be especially suspicious of a marketing campaign which complains of the medical profession snubbing the product. Appetite suppressants and hormone injections are seldom recommended my medical experts, as their effect is questionable and they come with risks of their own. Meal replacement shakes are becoming more and more popular. When exploring this avenue of weight loss, again you should make sure of your product. Some products may seem to be highly effective, and weigh loss may occur, but it is very possible that it is not fat that you are loosing, but rather water. For more detailed information on meal replacements you should consult a dietician. Any product with too much sugar and too little carbohydrates will be damaging to your diet. Prescription weight loss drugs usually rely on appetite suppression, although there is a drug known as Xenical which interferes with the bodys ability to absorb fat, reducing the fat intake of the body by up to 30 percent. The side effects of this drug include cramping, flatulence, discomfort of the intestines, diarrhoea and leakage of oily stool. Appetite suppressants such as a drug called Merida act by increasing certain chemicals in the brain which reduce your appetite. This drug can cause increased blood pressure and raise your heart rate, so is not advisable for those suffering from heart problems. Other side effects include headaches, constipation, insomnia and a dry mouth. Probably the best approach to losing weight is to adjust your eating patterns, but the easiest way to lose weight and maintain a healthy body is to make space in your life for fun activities which give you exercise, such as hiking, running, cycling or going to gym. If you have a medical problem which affects your metabolism then it is best to consult a doctor and dietician in addressing the problem. Bad Credit Car Loans Have Their Advantages

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Chandler]David Chandler Are you one of the many people who have credit problems? Poor credit ratings and bad credit is more common than you think. Bad credit is not something to be ashamed of as it can happen to all of us at some time in our life. The good news is that with some effort on your part you can improve your credit ratings. Even if you have bad credit, you can still qualify for a bad credit car loan. When you are ready to begin shopping for your car, there are a few things to consider. Do not take on a car payment that you know in your heart that you cannot afford. A bad credit car loan is a tool to help rebuild your credit ratings thus purchasing a car that you know you cannot afford can be more detrimental to your credit rating. In order to qualify for a bad credit car loan, you will need to have a job or sufficient income to pay your current bills, the loan payment you are about to commit to and the costs of maintaining and insuring your car. A steady and sufficient income could get you that bad credit car loan even if you have a bad credit. Your lender would like to see that you have had your current job for at least a year and this could make them overlook your bad credit hence increase chances in approving your bad credit car loan. Try to maintain your address for a while, as well, for this can keep your bad credit at bay and help in the approval of your bad credit car loan. Having a large down payment will also help in financing your new car with a bad credit loan. Your down payment will depend on the car model you wish to buy. It could range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Belonging to a credit union is advantages if you are trying to finance a car. The credit union criteria for applying for a loan is often more relaxed compared to banks and finance companies. The longer you have been a member in a credit union, the more positive the response is for your bad credit car loan despite a bad credit rating. Applying for your loan through a bank is another option. Should you have had a previous loan with them, they could still want to take a chance with you on your bad credit car loan. If by any chance you have paid off a previous loan, they could consider your bad credit car loan application even if you have bad credit history in other banks of finance companies. You could consider a co-signer for your car loan. Although your co-signer must have a good credit rating and meets all the necessary requirements of the bank, credit union or finance company. Bad credit will indeed affect your bad credit car loan application, but you can still explore other possibilities. A large volume car dealer can negotiate a car deal and possibly offer financing too. A finance company can also work with you and get the bad credit car loan you need. The trick to financing is to see an aggressive finance manager who will overlook your current bad credit and help to rebuild your credit rating with a bad credit car loan. The Lowdown on Obtaining An Online Nursing Master Degree

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Sara Reed Obtaining an online nursing master degree is important for several reasons. The most important reason is that many hospitals and other care facilities will not allow nurses to enter higher level administrative roles unless they have a master degree in nursing. This is because there are more management skills needed as well as advanced knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the care of patients. For a nurse to change careers and find a job in nursing administration, they will have to first earn a master degree in nursing to be considered for most positions. A nurse has two options. They can either find a nursing program at a university and begin to attend classes. These classes will probably meet two or three times a week sometimes for up to three hours. When a person is working and raising a family, it may be difficult to attend classes while trying to keep everything else together. Another option is to obtain an online nursing master degree. Programs like these do not rely on classroom time. Students learn at home. They are expected to complete assignments and turn in tests and reports on time, but there is no time spent trying to find ways to get to classes after work or between family activities. People who enroll in online programs want to obtain an online nursing master degree so that they can better themselves at work while still having time to spend with their families. While an online program will take time to complete, much less time will be needed traveling to and from classes. The workload does not change since the information must still be learned. But when a person can choose when they want to study and when they want to take their tests, it becomes easier to schedule the rest of their lives. To find out more about earning an online nursing master degree, Sara Reed recommends Nursing Online Degree. Healthy Weight Loss Tips for Women: 5 Ways to Staying Slim

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Katie Jay So congratulations! Youve lost some weight! Now, how do you keep it off? When youve spent weeks or even months striving and sacrificing, you dont want to have your spirits sink as you see the scale start to go up. For most of us, regardless of our weight loss method, weight regain is a real possibility. But is it inevitable? Follow these five sure tricks, and your scale will stay put: If you gain a pound, lose it! People who are successful at maintaining a weight loss weigh themselves at least twice a week. Pick regular times of day, and regular days of the week, to weigh and keep a chart. If you find youre up a pound or two, follow a healthy and structured food plan until the extra weight comes off again. Have planned snacks instead of grazing. To combat rampant, spontaneous snacking, plan a couple of balanced snacks every day that you can measure out and enjoy. Be sure to include some protein and complex carbohydrates in your snack. If you feed yourself a bit more frequently, you will be less likely to graze mindlessly. Balance your treats with healthy choices. You can have an occasional treat, but you can also have an occasional healthy choice. Keep the treat small so that you dont get a big sugar or unrefined carb rush. And if you must eat sugar or an unrefined carb, eat a little protein with it so that your blood sugar doesnt crash and cause cravings for more of the same. Admit your trigger foods and avoid them. All you have to do is look at certain foods and you know youll eat them. Dont keep any snack foods in plain site around your house. Put them away. If you find yourself going to the cupboard or refrigerator to peruse the snack items, youll need to keep the trigger foods out of your house altogether. Experiment and use the tools that work for you. Many dieters hate the act of writing down what they eat. Some dislike exercise. Others abhor weighing and measuring their food. Still others will not give up sugar and unrefined carbs. You need to be honest with yourself, though. These tools are proven to work. So, experiment with all the tools available to you and use the ones that work. Weight regain is not inevitable, but you need to take action to avoid it. Apply these solutions to your life and you will find weight maintenance to be simple and satisfying. Ambien Sleeping Pills

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rob_LaPlante] Rob LaPlante Ambien sleeping pills have become the most popular sleeping pills over the last few years, being taken by almost 22 million Americans. Ambien is a prescription based sleeping pill which your doctor can prescribe to help those who suffer from insomnia. It is not meant for long term use, although it can easily become addictive. Ambien is intended to help a person fall asleep quickly, and should be taken accordingly. Ambien are sleeping pills which would be classified as sedatives. The drug is intended to alter the chemicals in your brain which sometimes can become unbalanced and lead to insomnia. What Ambien does is it reduces the cells in the brain from being electronically active, causing a feeling of relaxation, and allows the person to fall asleep quickly and easily. There are some important things to consider when you are taking Ambien sleeping pills. First, since Ambien makes you fall asleep quickly, only take Ambien right before you go to bed. If you take the drug and stay up, you are at risk to do and say things you do not remember. This is because the chemicals in the brain have been altered. Also, make sure to follow your doctors directions when taking Ambien sleeping pills. Do not take Ambien while under the influence of other drugs or alcohol, as that can greatly increase the severity of any side effects. Driving or operating machinery also should not be done after taking Ambien sleeping pills. Ambien sleeping pills, for all the help they can provide you in falling asleep quickly at night, do have some major drawbacks. The longer you have been taking Ambien, the higher dosage you will need to achieve the same effects. Also, users will often develop mood swings, and can become very irritable, especially if they are unable to take the drug. Ambien sleeping pills can also produce hallucinations for the user, some of which can become very intense and frightening. Anyone taking Ambien sleeping pills must also be very cautious of not overdosing. If someone takes too many Ambien sleeping pills, they could become very sleepy or even go into a light coma. If the person has also been taking other drugs, the overdose could become very severe. There have even been a few cases of death resulting from an overdose of ambient sleeping pills. There are many benefits and could also be many drawbacks from taking Ambien sleeping pills. Just remember to consult your doctor, follow his instructions, and Ambien could be just what you need to get a good nights rest. Rob LaPlante is a web author who was written countless articles.
